Coal baron and mayor of Muttontown, John F. Bermingham, selected one of the most idyllic settings on Long Island for his magnificent 100+-acre estate, “Midland Farm,” not only for its beautiful rolling meadows dotted with stately trees, but its incredibly convenient “Gold Coast” location. Designed and built for him, circa 1924, by noted architect, James W. O’Connor, the stately Georgian brick manor was completely restored to its original splendor and greatly expanded in 2004 to create a masterpiece of historic charm and state-of-the-art modern amenities. Ensconced on over seven breathtaking acres of formal gardens and immense, manicured lawns with seemingly endless venues for recreational and entertaining pleasure, the remaining estate today retains a sense of serene seclusion, nearly surrounded by acres and acres of scenic farm and parkland.
Best known for its nature preserves, magnificent estates, and pleasant residential character, the village of Muttontown was incorporated in 1931, but its rich history and name dates back to the 1600’s when Dutch and English settlers found its verdant rolling hillsides ideal for raising sheep. During the early Twentieth Century, many of New York’s financial leaders established their grand residences on these majestic hills located only 25 miles from Manhattan. Two former estates of New York City families are now known as The Muttontown Golf and Country Club and The Woodcrest Club. With similar roots, the well-known 50- acre Muttontown Preserve offers miles of public cross country skiing and equestrian trails, estate grounds, and natural parkland. “Midland Farm” is within a few thousand feet of all three former estates and is convenient to additional golf courses, beach and boating, the Long Island Railroad, major highways, and is just a short drive from the Americana Mall.
Approached by over a quarter-mile of tree-lined private road, flanked by bucolic meadowland, and a winding wooded drive, the estate welcomes guests through majestic iron gates into a spacious brick-walled courtyard with stone driveway encircling an elegant fountain. A separate drive leads to a second, large courtyard accessing a service entrance portico and two 4-car garages, each with its own second-floor, 2-bedroom staff quarters. Designed for entertaining on a grand scale, the property boasts gorgeous formal gardens, a second fountain, original to the home, spilling into a circular pool, expansive bluestone terraces and veranda accessed from many of the principal rooms, a lighted har-tru tennis court, and a recently constructed spectacular outdoor entertainment complex. This is comprised of a large, heated, in-ground pool with brick surround, estate fencing, a brick wall with fireplace at one end and a generous pool house at the other with expansive patios, well-equipped indoor and outdoor kitchens, a large entertainment rotunda, and two full baths with dressing rooms.
Every bit as spectacular as its grounds, the mansion is a masterpiece of Georgian architecture embellished by exquisite millwork, boiserie, intricately crafted plaster ceilings, soaring bay windows, six exquisitely designed and unique fireplaces, and French doors galore. It encompasses six major bedrooms, seven full baths, five half-baths, a walk-up attic, and a full finished basement with playroom/school, dance studio, gym, powder room, music room, recreation room, laundry, plus mechanical, electric and telephone rooms. The first floor offers an ideal setting for grand “Great Gatsby” style entertaining with baronial sized and lavishly appointed rooms. Its richly adorned entrance foyer, with powder and cloak rooms plus floating bridal staircase, opens to the rear to a bright and airy living room with hand-glazed fielded-paneling and French doors opening to the immense rear patio. A walk-in wet bar leads to the ballroom-sized drawing room that warmly enfolds its occupants with rich paneling and an intricately hand-carved plaster ceiling. Steps lead down into the equally spacious great room in the new addition that features a large curved bay window flooding the room with sunny vistas and echoing the curve of a spiral staircase leading down to the lower level entertainment center with large home theater, foyer with refreshment stand and powder room, a safe room, and up to the expansive second floor master suite. Also accessed off the great room are a powder room, walk-in wet bar and a warm and inviting study. Through an archway off the entrance foyer, a gallery leads into the west wing of the house, which includes a grand formal dining room ideal for the finest in banquet entertaining adjoined by a lovely informal dining room for more intimate entertaining or breakfast while enjoying views through its soaring bay window. An additional dining area is included in the fifty-foot long, totally renovated eat-in-kitchen/family room with an inviting seating area with fireplace at one end, dining area and a gourmet cook’s delight of a kitchen at the rear with hand-glazed cabinetry, large center island and only the finest in state-of-the-art appliances. A huge pantry/lounge and a delightful paneled library complete the area. The second floor offers a magnificent and palatial master suite with stained glass sky-lit foyer, two lavish baths, four dressing room/closets and a spacious master bedroom with ornate tray ceiling, fireplace and private deck. Six beautifully adorned bedrooms with baths en suite are off an elegant gallery with wainscot and barrel ceiling.
Additional features include 55-zone heating system, 11-zone central air-conditioning, radiant heat under all stone floors, central alarm, central sound system, telephone/intercom system, 3 fire stations throughout the house with 100 ft. fire hose, 165 kW generator for entire property, in-ground sprinkler system, and estate fencing.
